Union Pines NJROTC About Us

As a member of the NJROTC, we are dedicated to the Core Values of HONOR, COURAGE, and COMMITMENT to build the foundation of trust and leadershop upon strength and guide us in our daily activities; we will be faithful ot these Core Values as our abiding duty and privilage.

What is NJROTC?

The NJROTC program was established by Public Law in 1964 and may be found in Title 10, U.S. Code, Chapter 102. The program is conducted at accredited secondary schools throughout the nation, by instructors who are retired Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard officers and enlisted personnel. The NJROTC curriculum emphasizes citizenship and leadership development, as well as our maritime heritage, the significance of sea power, and naval topics such as the fundamentals of naval operations, seamanship, navigation and meteorology. Classroom instruction is augmented throughout the year by community service activities, drill competition, field meets, flights, visits to naval activities, marksmanship training, and other extra-curricular activities. Uniforms, textbooks, training aids, and a substantial portion of instructors' salaries are provided by the Navy.

SOUNDS PRETTY SERIOUS--IS THERE ANY FUN STUFF?

NJROTC cadets participate in a number of outside activities throughout the school year and during the summer months. These opportunities are designed to stimulate learning by hands-on experience and to reinforce classroom instruction. Some of these activities include:

School and local activities such as drill teams, rifle teams, orienteering, unit athletics, parades, field days, and nonpolitical community activities.
Military/leadership training of about 1 week during the spring and summer months.
Orientation visits (3 to 5 days) to various naval and military bases.
Cruises aboard U.S. naval vessels (1 day to 2 weeks) normally conducted during the summer months.

WHAT DOES THE NAVY PROVIDE?

The Navy provides schools hosting NJROTC units with instructional materials, equipment, uniforms, monetary reimbursement for orientation trips, funds specified expenditures, and instructor salary reimbursement. Instructional materials include textbooks, training aids, and items of equipment such as computers, videodisc players, videodiscs, videocassette recorders, video cameras, and monitors prescribed in the NJROTC curriculum. These items will normally be provided directly to the unit by CNET.

There are 7 NJROTC areas in the United States
Union Pines High School is located in Area 5
DC, North Carolina, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia make up Area 5
All Naval Science Instructors are retired duty
As of September 1999 there are 434 NJROTC units in the United States
The NJROTC at Union Pines Hich School was commissioned in 2001
Approximately 35% of all NJROTC program graduates enter the military service
